History of Palm Harbor
Established by J.C. Craver in 1877, and initially called Sutherland, an abbreviated form of the term Southern Land and Development Company, which oversaw its growth, the town's name was eventually changed to Palm Harbor in 1925. But the depression kept it from developing into a city and it was never incorporated in Pinellas County. Twenty years ago Palm Harbor was mostly a citrus farm, today it has turned into one of the most affluent unincorporated communities in the Tampa Bay area. And, since 2002 a movement toward making Palm Harbor into an incorporated area of Pinellas County has been initiated.
Palm Harbor Community, Recreation and Education
With a mild climate throughout the year and the prolific sunny weather adds to Palm Harbor´s attraction. Most of the downtown has been restored and many historical pieces are on display in the area's historical museum. There are three fine arts, crafts and music festivals annually: The Palm Harbor Arts, Palm Harbor Day in May, and Crafts & Music Festival held in December and the Downtown Merchants Arts, Crafts and Music Festival in February.
Palm Harbor is home to some of the best resorts and golfing greens in the country like The Westin Innisbrook Resort in the posh upscale portion of Pinellas County. In addition, Orlando's fun theme parks are only a 90 minute drive away. East Lake is also a part of Palm Harbor.
Palm Harbor has gained the distinction of being one of the best school districts in Pinellas County. Many families relocate to Palm Harbor so that their children get the finest education available. It is a good choice when it comes to quality education. Students can select a school of their choice without the hindrance of forced bus travels to distant schools. The School Choice Plan enables parents and students to choose either a school in their neighborhood or outside the limits of their immediate area.
